Budgeting for your trip

As elsewhere in Russia, St Petersburg can be eye-wateringly expensive one minute and surprisingly good value for money the next. Be aware that during White Nights prices go up by about 30 percent.

Flights. Expect to pay around £300 for a direct return flight from London to St Petersburg when booked well in advance, perhaps slightly less if you are willing to change planes somewhere on the Continent (such as Rome or Kyiv).

Accommodation. For a budget double room per night, expect to pay up to US$100, mid-range US$100–200, high-end US$200–300 and for de luxe over US$300.

Meals. A three-course dinner for two, with drinks, can be had in one of the many modest restaurants and cafés for US$30 or less. Expect to pay significantly more in elegant restaurants.

Museums. Two-tiered pricing system with higher entrance for foreigners, at around US$11–12, operates in many of the city’s museums. Entry to the main building of the Hermitage and its other buildings costs about US$12.

Entertainment. If you don’t opt for the best box seats, theatre and concert tickets are US$10–20, and opera and ballet up to US$50.

Transport. Taxis around the city are usually under US$10, even through car services. A car and driver cost US$15–100 an hour (depending on the class of car), but one ride on the metro (regardless of distance) costs around US$1.
